Earning basics for teens 14-18

Their first check landed smaller than they thought.
You didn't have a clean answer either.

Rate times hours isn't what shows up. Earning, Unlocked walks a teen through exactly where the rest of it went, why the next offer won't pay what the sign says, and how to build a work schedule that survives a real school week. 5 short lessons. Lesson 1 is free.

What's inside

5 lessons. Real paychecks. No lectures.

Each lesson is short, interactive, and built around a real paycheck or a real offer, not a definition to memorize. They finish knowing what to expect from a first job and how to plan around one.

1

Where The Rest Of It Went

20 hours at $15 an hour is $300. The check says $250. This lesson accounts for every dollar of the gap, and for what already counts as earning beyond a job with a stub.

Who Has That Money Now

FICA, federal withholding, state withholding. What each one buys, which parts can come back, and the one fact almost no teen has heard: the employer pays part of it again, on top.

What The Sign Doesn't Say

An advertised rate describes the best night, not a normal week. This lesson prices 2 real offers against each other so the number on the sign stops being the whole decision.

4

Which Work, And What To Ask For

The rule on teen work hours, the 3 real ways to start earning at different ages, and how to ask a manager for more hours or a schedule change without it going badly.

Run Six Weeks

School, sleep, and commute don't move. Everything else is a choice. This is where they build a real 6 week earning plan and find out what it actually costs to say yes to more hours.

Hey, teen

Nobody explains where your check actually goes.

You worked the hours. The number in the app is smaller than rate times hours, and whoever handed you that first stub probably didn't explain why. Neither could most parents, honestly.

Earning, Unlocked is 5 short lessons you can do on your phone. You'll route a real paycheck through the same gates the government does, price 2 job offers against each other, and build a 6 week work plan that doesn't wreck your school load.

If you want it, send your parents this page. Lesson 1 is free so you can try it first.

FAQ

Good questions.

No. Lesson 1 works from a first paycheck stub whether or not your teen has one yet, and Lesson 4 covers 3 different ways to start earning, not just a job with an employer. It's built to be useful before the first shift, not just after.
It covers what a paycheck deduction buys and whether it comes back, which is as far as it goes on purpose. Filing a return, the W-4, and claiming a refund are a separate course, Taxes, Unlocked, coming later in the line.
Yes. Lesson 1 names babysitting, mowing, pet sitting, and reselling as real earning alongside a job with a stub, and Lesson 4 treats work you find yourself as one of 3 legitimate starting paths, not a lesser one.
Earning, Unlocked is built for teens 14-18. The language, examples, and activities are all designed for that age range. It works whether your teen already has a job or hasn't earned a dollar yet.
Each lesson runs roughly 8 to 14 minutes, so the whole course is about an hour, usually spread across a few sittings. It's self-paced, and once your teen sets up their account, progress saves automatically.
Any device with a browser - phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. No app to download, no account to create to try Lesson 1.
You'll get immediate access to all 5 lessons plus 2 downloadable reference guides. Access doesn't expire, and you buy it once with no time limit.
It's fully self-directed. That said, Lesson 2's paycheck walkthrough is a natural thing to do together if your teen just got their first stub and you want an easy way into that conversation.
